Composer JOSEPH THALKEN
1 – 2 PM
Signature Theatre's Mead Lobby
Emerging composer Joseph Thalken burst into the world of musical theatre with two impressive premieres: Harold & Maude: The Musical with book and lyrics by the legendary Tom Jones, based on the cult film favorite, and the musical adaptation of Geoff Ryman's celebrated novelWas, originally developed at Lincoln Center Theater. Thalken was one of the many young composers who collaborated with lyricist Mark Campbell on the innovative songcycle Songs from an Unmade Bed.
Thalken's And the Curtain Rises looks at a musical theatre birthing process fraught with confusion, disorder, and a whole lot of humor—much like the creation of a modern musical! The show is a classic backstage comedy loosely based on the creation of the first exclusively American musical.
Explore the journey of composing a musical with Joseph Thalken and get a preview glimpse ofAnd the Curtain Rises before the curtain rises in Signature's MAX Theatre. Join us and bring your lunch if you like—refreshments are welcome.

For over nine years, Sara Jaffe has been a valued, respected and admired member of the Signature family. She recently has left Signature to become the Vice President of the Northern Virginia Community Foundation. As Director of Development, Sara broadened and deepened relationships between Signature Theatre and the community. She created and implemented fundraising strategies to increase the organization's visibility and support from individuals, corporations, and foundations, and manages a variety of Patron Services issues. Under Sara's direction, Signature raised $10.3 million (exceeding its $7.5 million goal) for the new building and grew Signature's donor base from 500 to well over 2,000.
She was also the force behind planning and implementing Signature's annual Sondheim Gala. Sara worked closely with the Signature Board of Directors, staff, and key volunteer leaders to advocate and achieve the fundraising goals and mission of the organization. Her experience in strategic planning, research, cultivation, special event planning, and close relationships with the philanthropic community have been instrumental to Signature's growth and sustainability.
Get a behind-the-scenes look from one of the experts at one of the most important and challenging components of non-profit theater: fundraising. Donations will not be solicited, but all questions are welcomed and will be answered. So bring yours and join Sara on Monday, March 7.
Page to Stage is part of Signature Theatre's Community Events Programs. It is provided free of charge and no tickets or reservations are required.
