National Geographic Kids Ocean Flag Design Contest

An Arlington 5th Grader is one of 10 finalists in the National Geographic Kids Ocean Flag design contest. See Jordan's submission and cast your vote!

Jordan A., 10, Virginia

My picture is a picture of a Bottle Nosed Dolphins making a recycle sign around the sea turtle. I did that because if we recycle more, less trash will be going into the sea, saving sea life. In science class my teacher taught us about the ocean and how beautiful it was, and the lovely animals that live in it. So, I drew the sea turtle because I researched the sea turtle for a school project. I drew dolphins because, that was one of the lovely animals my teacher taught us about and because my class and went to an aquarium to see a dolphin show and it was beautiful. The sea turtle and dolphins is one of my favorite animals, that live in the sea. I made the back around color blue because blue is the color of water. The fish are different colors because the colors represent different types of endangered fish. The blue stands for Blue fin tuna, the red stands for sail fish, the green stands for sea horse, the yellow stands for the sword fish, the orange stands for tuna, and the purple stands for the sea bass. Saving endangered fish is important. The orange border stands for not over fishing and for clean ocean.

Subway to introduce breakfast menu

Subway's breakfast options will include a Western egg-white melt on a light whole-wheat English muffin.

Subway will launch a national breakfast menu of egg and cheese sandwiches next month, joining other quick-service players in the increasingly competitive hunt for morning sales.

The new breakfast sandwiches debuted March 1 in Canada and will be sold at more than 25,000 of Subway's North America locations beginning April 5.

The sandwiches feature omelets made from regular eggs or egg whites and cheese. Options include Western egg and cheese; Black Forest ham, egg and cheese; double bacon, egg and cheese; and steak, egg and cheese. For the bread, customers can choose light whole-wheat English muffins, flatbread or Subway's traditional 6-inch or foot-long hoagie breads.

All the breakfast sandwiches can be customized to include any vegetables or condiments Subway uses during lunch.

Taste of Arlington 2010

Taste of Arlington® is an annual event that transforms the Ballston area into a lively street festival, complete with local entertainment, lively sponsors, children's activities, and lots of noteworthy restaurants. Over 40 restaurants participate in this spectacular community event, which draws an average of 10,000 people each year who live in the greater Washington, D.C. area.

This year, the event will expand its footprint by providing a deeper flavor of Arlington, showcasing the county's urban villages such as Ballston, Clarendon-Courthouse, Columbia Pike, Rosslyn, Shirlington, Lee Highway, Crystal City and Pentagon City. The Ballston-Virginia Square Partnership is the new host and owner of the event and is organizing it in partnership with the Clarendon Alliance, Columbia Pike Revitalization Organization, Rosslyn Renaissance and the National Science Foundation.

CHOUPI Cart - Crepes & Waffles

If you work in Rosslyn and have been envious of all those downtown offices which get frozen yogurt and cupcakes delivered to their door, now you've got a food cart of your own to brag about.
The Choupi Cart has been making the rounds in Rosslyn, serving crepes and waffles to Arlington workers for the past few weeks. Both savory and sweet crepes are available at the location, which is based at 1218 19th St N. but has been spotted on Wilson Boulevard as well.
You can follow the cart's hours and operations on Twitter.

UNICEF Tap Project during World Water Week 2010

What is the UNICEF Tap Project?
In 2007, the UNICEF Tap Project was born in New York City based on a simple concept: restaurants would ask their patrons to donate $1 or more for the tap water they usually enjoy for free, and all funds raised would support UNICEF’s efforts to bring clean and accessible water to millions of children around the world.

Growing from just 300 New York City restaurants in 2007 to thousands across the country today, the UNICEF Tap Project has quickly become a powerful national movement.

During World Water Week, March 21-27, 2010, the UNICEF Tap Project will once again raise awareness of the world water crisis and vital funds to help the millions of children it impacts daily. All funds raised support UNICEF's water, sanitation and hygiene programs, and the effort to bring clean and accessible water to millions of children around the world.

Thousands of restaurants across the country will participate in the UNICEF Tap Project during World Water Week 2010 (March 21-27). Dining in one—and donating $1 for the tap water you would normally receive for free—is a great way to help UNICEF provide lifesaving water and sanitation to kids around the world.
